For John Hillcoat’s Prohibition-era drama¬†Lawless, Zoic Studios re-created a 1930’s small town in Franklin County, West Virginia. Working with production VFX Supervisor Bill Taylor, Zoic Studios also created a Chicago scene, which had not been completely shot. The Zoic team lifted images of Gary Oldman’s character Floyd Banner from two takes of the shootout in Franklin County, and placed him in a Chicago alley, leaving the scene of another “business transaction by Tommy-gun.” Animating a dust storm overwhelming a dust-bowl town was achieved efficiently with 2D and 3D VFX trickery.
